I called their customer service today and the operator confirmed that they discontinued the Hawken. With full 50-60gr charges of 1F black powder, my Walker levers do not drop , even with full day of shooting. 1F in the big Colts is fun, it probably doesn't make much real difference but it works so I'm sticking with it.Then forge you out a simple strap staple from a coat hanger or 1/8th inch wire. Pre-drill a couple of undersized holes and tap the staple in. Won't effect the value of this horn one bit! Use a little gun bluing or browning to take the new made off of your staple. The web of wood separating the barrel from the ramrod channel is too thick creating a clunky appearance usually with the ramrod hanging below the muzzle cap.Sometimes, in the field, the ramrod isn't stuck that bad and you can make a little jig out of metal plate with a 3/8" hole (if that is the diameter of your ramrod). Just look at the ballistics data a .54 loaded with 120 grains 3f will get about 1800 fps in a 35" barrel or so. At 100 yards will slow to 1050 or so. An 80 grain charge will do about 1500 fps and will slow to a little more then 900. Fater charges won't buy you a lot down range.Generally speaking, most of us on the forum here want pure lead. Hornady's plain round balls are pure lead, generally speaking, although they do make .485 "hardballs" put up in blister packs with a little plastic sabot or cup for each ball. When I first got my Walker 4-5 years ago I found the loading lever would drop pretty regularly under recoil. Anther fella on a different board described a minor modification to the loading lever latch that solved the problem. Rebuilding and running a black powder plant safely is not a trivial matter. We brought in explosives manufacturing experts and made improvements throughout the plant.I like the fact that they have a hole cross drilled horizontally in the area where the cap sits.
